From JD:
'As a current participant at the Recurse Center in NYC, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring new forms of composition, most specifically in the Python programming language. At first I was focused on writing my library of compositional tools that work with MIDI data, though I was soon introduced to the idea of data sonification through another “recurser”, Edith Viau (MTL), who explores the subject through her Financialist project. Edith seemed to be the only other person at RC exploring the subject already and we soon formed the Data Sonification Group at RC thereafter.
Sonifications of Price consists of two compositions written in Python, mapped to the prices of Bitcoin and Gold, respectively. “Bitcoin” represents the price everyday from 2010-2021 and “Gold” represents the price each month since 1950.
Large and invisible forces run our modern world and often they can feel exceptionally abstract, and even scary within the context of our lives. This work is an attempt to demystify their scale and convey a translation of power.'
